PLA vs PETG: Which Filament Should You Choose?
A practical side-by-side for beginners — strength, heat, finish, and when each material actually makes sense.

If you’ve shopped for 3D printed parts (or started printing at home), you’ve probably seen PLA and PETG everywhere. They’re the two most common FDM filaments — and picking the wrong one is one of the fastest ways to get a part that warps, cracks, or softens when you need it most.
Here’s the short version: PLA wins for easy printing and clean detail. PETG wins when the part needs to take heat, flex a little, or survive real use. The rest of this guide unpacks why.

What is PLA?
PLA (Polylactic Acid) is the default filament for most hobby printers. It’s plant-derived (often corn starch), prints at lower temperatures, and sticks to the bed with almost no drama. PLA+ is a tougher PLA blend — same easy workflow, a bit less brittle.
Choose PLA when you want:
- Crisp detail on miniatures, logos, and fine features
- Indoor organizers, stands, and display pieces
- Fast turnaround with fewer print failures
- A stiff part that doesn’t need to flex
Skip PLA when:
- The part will sit in a hot car, near a heater, or outdoors in summer sun
- You need snap-fits or parts that take repeated bending
- Impact resistance matters more than a perfect surface
What is PETG?
PETG is in the same family as water-bottle plastic (PET), modified with glycol so it prints more easily. It’s the go-to “functional” filament for many shops: stronger layer bonding, better heat tolerance, and a little give instead of snapping.
Choose PETG when you want:
- Brackets, mounts, clips, and RC / hobby hardware
- Parts that see warmth, vibration, or light outdoor use
- Something tougher than PLA without jumping to ABS
- Better chemical resistance for workshop environments
Watch out for:
- More stringing / “hairs” between parts if settings aren’t tuned
- Slightly less razor-sharp fine detail than PLA
- Can be stickier on the nozzle — moisture-sensitive filament helps a lot
Strength: stiff vs tough
PLA feels rigid. Push it hard and it may crack. PETG feels tougher — it can bend a bit before it breaks. For a coin tray on a desk, PLA is perfect. For a clip that snaps onto a tube or an RC mount that sees crashes, PETG is usually the smarter call.
Print settings still matter: wall count and infill can make a “weak” material outperform a poorly printed “strong” one. Material choice is step one; good slice settings are step two.
Heat: the hot-car test
Leave a PLA part on a dashboard in summer and it can soften or warp. PETG shrugs off those temperatures much better. If your use case includes cars, garages, electronics enclosures, or anything near motors/heat sources, lean PETG.
Neither is a high-temp engineering plastic like polycarbonate or nylon — but between these two, PETG is clearly the heat winner for everyday parts.
Finish and looks
PLA generally looks cleaner out of the printer: sharper corners, less stringing, nicer detail on text and logos. PETG often has a slight sheen and may need a quick cleanup pass on stringy spots. For display pieces and gift items, PLA (or PLA+) is usually preferred. For shop tools and functional hardware, looks matter less than survival.
Which should you buy?
Pick PLA / PLA+ if…
It’s indoor, decorative, or detail-focused — organizers, stands, collectibles, prototypes you’ll handle gently.
Pick PETG if…
It has a job to do — mounts, clips, cases, anything that gets warm, flexed, or knocked around.

FAQ
Is PETG waterproof?
It’s more water-resistant than PLA, but FDM layer lines aren’t a perfect seal. Don’t count on either for pressurized or submerged use without extra sealing.
Is PLA biodegradable?
PLA is industrially compostable under the right conditions — it won’t magically disappear in a landfill or backyard pile. Treat it like plastic for disposal.
Can I paint either one?
Yes. Light sanding and a primer help. PLA usually takes paint a bit more predictably; PETG may need more surface prep for adhesion.
What about ABS?
ABS is stronger on heat than both, but harder to print (warping, fumes, enclosure). For most shop products, PLA+ and PETG cover 90% of needs.
