Layer Height Explained: Smooth vs Fast 3D Prints
Why 0.12 mm looks different from 0.28 mm — and how to choose the right layer height without overpaying for detail you don’t need.

Every FDM print is a stack of thin plastic ribbons. Layer height is how thick each ribbon is. Smaller layers mean a smoother surface and longer print times. Larger layers finish faster with more visible “stair steps.” Getting this right is one of the easiest ways to balance quality, cost, and turnaround.
The quick rule of thumb
0.12–0.16 mm — Fine detail
Miniatures, logos, curved surfaces where layer lines should almost disappear. Slowest and often pricier for large parts.
0.20 mm — Everyday default
The sweet spot for most organizers, stands, and shop products. Clean enough for retail, fast enough for production.
0.24–0.32 mm — Draft / bulky
Big functional parts where strength and speed matter more than a silky finish. Layer lines are obvious up close.
What layer height does not control
- Horizontal detail — Fine text and thin walls depend more on nozzle size and design than layer height
- Strength alone — Walls and infill usually matter more than shaving 0.04 mm off each layer

Time and cost
Halving layer height roughly doubles the number of layers — so print time climbs fast on tall parts. That’s why custom shops don’t default everything to “ultra fine.” We match layer height to the job: display pieces get finer settings; brackets and trays stay in the production zone.
When to ask for finer layers
- Visible curves, faces, or branding that will be seen up close
- Gift / display items where finish is the product
- Small parts where stair-stepping looks exaggerated
Skip ultra-fine when:
- The part is hidden, painted, or purely functional
- You need the fastest turnaround on a large print
- Budget matters more than a glass-smooth shell
FAQ
Is a smaller layer height always better?
No. Past a point you pay in time for detail you can’t see in normal use. Match the setting to how the part will be viewed and used.
Can I sand away layer lines instead?
Sometimes. Sanding and primer help a lot on PLA. For production runs, dialing layer height correctly is cheaper than finishing every unit by hand.
Does nozzle size matter?
Yes. A 0.4 mm nozzle is the common default. Larger nozzles print faster and thicker; smaller nozzles help with fine XY detail.
